Irregular Verbs (Неправильные глаголы)

Правильные глаголы образуют простое прошедшее время и причастие прошедшего времени, прибавляя ED к базовой форме глагола: play – played – played; work – worked – worked.
Неправильные глаголы образуют простое прошедшее время и причастие прошедшего времени, изменяя корень слова: go – went – gone; take – took – taken.

Note 1: BrE and AmE

Эти глаголы обычно правильные в американском английском: burn, dream, kneel, lean, leap, learn, misspell, smell, spell, spill, spoil. Они образуют простое прошедшее и причастие прошедшего времени, присоединяя окончание -ed.

Note 2: Some other BrE and AmE differences

Simple Past of "dive": dived (BrE); dived, dove (AmE).

Simple Past of "sink": sank (BrE); sank, sunk (AmE).

Simple Past of "spring": sprang (BrE); sprang, sprung (AmE).

Past Participle of "get": got (BrE); got, gotten (AmE).

Past Participle of "strike": struck (BrE); struck, stricken (AmE). The form "stricken" is used in AmE mostly about feelings. For example: She was struck with panic. She was stricken with panic. (Форма "stricken" употребляется в AmE в основном о чувствах. Например: Она была охвачена паникой.)

Simple Past and Past Participle of "spit": spit – spat – spat (BrE); spit – spat, spit – spat, spit (AmE).

Note 3: Variants of forms

Если глагол имеет варианты форм прошедшего времени и причастия прошедшего времени, всегда проверяйте по словарю. Обычно, первый вариант в словаре – самый распространённый. В ряде случаев могут быть различия в значении или предпочтения в употреблении. Например, сравните значения форм глаголов ниже.

abide

abided (Simple Past): He always abided by the rules. (Он всегда соблюдал правила.)

abode (Simple Past) (old use/устар.): He abode in a small hut near the lake. (Он обитал в маленькой хижине у озера.)

bid

bid (Simple Past): He bid three hundred dollars for the painting. (Он предложил цену в триста долларов за эту картину.)

bade, bid (Simple Past): He bade her good morning. He bid her good morning. (Он сказал ей доброе утро. / Он пожелал ей доброго утра.) She bade farewell to them. (Она попрощалась с ними.) She bade him leave. (Она сказала (попросила, приказала) ему уйти.)

bear

born (Past Participle): He was born in London. (Он родился / был рождён в Лондоне.) She was born in 1960. (Она родилась в 1960 г.)

borne (Past Participle): She has borne two sons. (Она родила двух сыновей.)

borne (Past Participle): The bodies of the deceased were borne into the church. (Тела умерших внесли в церковь.)

hang

hung (Simple Past and Past Participle): He hung his coat on a hook. (Он повесил своё пальто на крючок.) The picture was hung too high. (Картину повесили слишком высоко.)

hanged (Simple Past and Past Participle): They hanged the captives. (Они повесили пленных.) He was hanged for his crimes. (Его повесили / Он был казнён через повешение за его преступления.)

shine

shone (Simple Past): His face shone with happiness. (Его лицо сияло от счастья.)

shined (Simple Past): He shined his shoes yesterday. (Он начистил / отполировал свои туфли до блеска вчера.)

Note: show

Форма "shown" для Past Participle (has shown, had shown) более употребительна, чем форма "showed" (has showed, had showed). Только форма "shown" употребляется в пассиве: Этот фильм был показан по телевидению несколько раз.

Irregular verb "awake" (awoke, awaked; awoke, awaked): He awoke at seven. (Он проснулся в семь.) The noise awoke him. (Шум разбудил его.)

Irregular verb "wake" (woke, waked; woken, waked): He woke up at seven. (Он проснулся в семь.) The noise woke him up. (Шум разбудил его.) He was woken by some noise. (Его разбудил какой-то шум.)

Regular verb "awaken" (awakened; awakened): He was awakened by a loud noise. (Его разбудил громкий шум.)

Irregular verb "arise" (arose; arisen): A new question arose at the meeting. (Новый вопрос возник на собрании.)

Irregular verb "rise" (rose; risen): He rose from his chair and went out. (Он поднялся со стула и вышел.)

Regular verb "raise" (raised; raised): He raised his hand. (Он поднял руку.)

lie, lay, lie

Irregular verb "lie" (lay; lain): She lay awake till morning. (Она пролежала без сна до утра.)

Irregular verb "lay" (laid; laid): They laid a new carpet on the floor of the bedroom. (Они положили новый ковёр на пол спальни.)

Regular verb "lie" (lied; lied): He lied to me. (Он солгал мне.)
